In this painting, five children are gathered with the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar—qin (music 琴), qi (chess 棋), shu (reading 書), and hua (painting 畫). They are not only displaying their individual talents but also participating in a tradition transcending time and space, learning to embody the spirit of these arts that have carried the essence of Chinese literati culture for centuries.
